The space under the arches of the Negrelli Viaduct is alive with culture, art, and social life. The pilot arch was put into operation in December 2024.
The aim of the City of Prague is to build a recreational zone under the bridge arches and on nearby city-owned land. As part of the pilot project, an interior is being built according to the design of the MOBA architectural studio in arch number 036.
On December 3, 2024, the pilot arch 36 was ceremonially opened for operation, with the planned function of an information and exhibition center. During the two-year trial operation, in cooperation with TSK and CTU, continuous measurement of the impact of the interior's operation on the bridge structure will be carried out.
The Negrelli Viaduct is the second oldest preserved bridge in Prague after Charles Bridge. Built in the years 1846–1850 as part of the line from Děčín–Prague–Vienna, according to the project of the Austrian engineer Alois Negrelli von Moldelbe. It is one of the most significant technical structures in Prague and the entire Czech Republic.
The bridge is part of the line from Masaryk Station through Karlín and Štvanice Island to Bubny. It is 1120 m long and has a total of 99 arches. Until 1910, it was the longest bridge in Europe.
Since its creation, the arches (especially in Karlín) and the adjacent surroundings have been used for various purposes, whether as warehouses, parking lots, or commercial premises. In the 1990s, the city began negotiating with the state organizations that own the bridge about the possibilities of future use of the arches and the overall revitalization of the bridge and its surroundings.
The bridge has been a protected monument since 1964. It survived even the devastating flood in the summer of 2002 during full operation. In the years 2017–2020, it underwent a long-needed reconstruction, which finally opened the way for the meaningful use of the bridge arches.
