The revitalization of the space under the Negrelli Viaduct in Prague's Karlín district is celebrating extraordinary international success – the project 1 KM of Urban Change – The Path to Transforming Viaduct Karlin into a Community Asset has been selected as one of the six finalists for the prestigious competition New European Bauhaus Prizes 2025, specifically in the category Prioritising the places and people that need it the most. This category recognizes initiatives that bring positive change, especially where it is most needed.
The project represents a unique transformation of a 1 km long public space under the oldest railway bridge in Prague. The goal was not only to restore the monumentally protected structure but also to create a vibrant urban corridor, which connects infrastructure with culture, community life, and architectural quality.
The preparation and realization involved the City of Prague, the Prague 8 municipal district, Studio CCEA MOBA, Správa železnic (Railway Administration), and other stakeholders from the public and non-profit sectors. Trade Centre Praha, a.s., a municipal management company, is currently responsible for the daily operation and management of the spaces under the viaduct. In 2024, the pilot arch no. 036was presented to the public, hosting cultural and community events, workshops, and neighborhood gatherings.
"Viaduct Karlín shows how even a complex and technical urban space can come alive through collaboration between the city, architects, and the community. The recognition within the New European Bauhaus is confirmation that we are heading in the right direction," says Yvette Vašourková from CCEA MOBA, who was instrumental in the concept's inception.
